Toothbrushes have been around for the past eight decades. The design of the toothbrush seemed flawless, (other than a few minor changes and tweaks within the past sixty years), until the 90’s. Electronic toothbrushes came around sometime in the 1990’s and people were excited for an “easier” and electronic alternative to brushing their teeth. Since then, the big debate of which toothbrush works better has been thrown around and overdone. Here at Fantastic Smiles, it’s not our job to tell you what toothbrush you should use, but to simply bring the facts to the dentist chair. Here are the Pros and Cons of both the traditional toothbrush and the electronic toothbrush.

Traditional

PROS

  • Use proper brushing technique. Since you have all of the control, you are sure to brush your teeth the proper way without missing a spot.
  • Variety of styles. Whether you want soft or hard bristles, a smaller sized head for a small mouth, or just a special color the traditional toothbrushes are sure to have exactly what you need.
  • Travel savvy. Going on a trip? No worries. Just grab a toothbrush case/holder and you’re on your way. You can even brush your teeth on a deserted island!
  • Who doesn't love cheap or free? With having to change your toothbrush every three months, cheap toothbrushes are better for some people. Remember, whenever you visit your dentist, you get a FREE toothbrush!

CONS

  • More work, who likes that? This is pretty self-explanatory. Seeing as there aren’t any gears or batteries attached, you need to do all of the work brushing your teeth.
  • Better get a stopwatch. There aren’t timers on the traditional toothbrushes unlike the electronic toothbrushes, so you either have to guess if you’ve been brushing for two minutes, or time yourself.

Electronic:

PROS

  • "E" for easy. It’s no coincidence electronic and easy both start with “e”. With this toothbrush, all you need to do is place the toothbrush at 45 degrees and let it do the brushing.
  • Cleaner mouth. In some studies, it shows that electronic toothbrushes do a better job at removing plaque and gingivitis from your mouth, which keeps it clean.
  • Fun for the kids. If it has to do with clean, kids don’t want any part in that; unless it has batteries. Overall, a self-timing electronic toothbrush just sounds and is more fun.
  • "Ding!" Time's up! No more guessing for you with the built in timers that stop the toothbrush once your two minutes are up.

CONS

  • Charge that brush. Obviously the electronic toothbrushes need to be charged or need to have their batteries replaced. Both which cost a little extra, and take a little more time if in a hurry.
  • Cha-ching! Be prepared when buying a good electronic toothbrush, even the most inexpensive ones can cost significantly more than the traditional brushes.
  • "But this tent doesn't have an outlet." Let’s face it, not all places we travel have outlets. If you have a toothbrush you need to charge, just be aware that it will die. Not only do we have to worry about charging, but they are big and bulky in bags and suitcases.
  • Don't drop the brush. Hold on tight to those electronic toothbrushes! Dropping one of these is like any other electronic: fatal.

Overall, one toothbrush is not significantly better than the other. As long as you practice good teeth brushing procedures, your teeth are sure to stay healthy and clean. If you need help in choosing what toothbrush to use, ask a professional and they can help steer you in the right direction.
